Identifying and Assessing Risk Using VR with the British Safety Council

The British Safety Council wanted to train students to effectively evaluate levels of risk by identifying and assessing hazards in a commercial kitchen.

How it works

Using an Oculus Go headset or Google Cardboard viewer and smartphone, learners enter a computer-generated commercial kitchen environment where they carry out a risk assessment.

As the student moves through the VR kitchen they see avatars taking on different cooking and cleaning tasks, if they feel that one is a potential hazard they approach and engage the avatar to assess and record the hazard severity and gain a better understanding of their situation allowing them to complete the risk assessment.

Learners can make mistakes and understand consequences of failing to follow process. They can also learn the correct procedures through trial and error.

When students have finished identifying five potential hazards, they are shown their results. The tutor can also keep track of students’ results on a companion app and student results can be tracked and analysed through a VR Management System (VRMS) by tutors and administrators. The British Safety Council have included the VR simulation in their IOSH Managing Safely and NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety programmes.
